Do good together
Some groups exist to contribute, such as beach clean-ups, planting days, food rescue shifts and giving circles. They are a social way to start and a direct way to give back. Choose a kind of group to see them all.

Use your work skills for a not-for-profit
Many not-for-profits need skills they can't afford to hire, such as financial planning, marketing, a new website or a better way to manage their data. Do Good Club will match people who have these skills with not-for-profits that need them.
- Business and strategy
- Marketing and communications
- Finance and accounting
- Software and websites
- Design
- Legal
- HR and people
- Data and reporting
- Tell us your skills, or what your organisation needs
- We match you for a defined project or a few hours a month
- We will contact you when matching opens
Join a not-for-profit board
Most community organisations are governed by a volunteer board or committee. Small clubs and charities are often looking for a treasurer, a secretary or general members, and many say no experience is needed.
- 1
Learn what the role involves
A board sets an organisation's direction, approves its budget, oversees its finances and manages risk.
- Meetings
- Every one to three months, usually in the evening
- Time
- From about 12 hours a year to 12 hours a month
- Pay
- Board roles at charities are usually unpaid
Your legal duties, in brief
At a registered charity, board members must act with care and diligence, act honestly in the charity's best interests, not misuse their position, disclose conflicts of interest, make sure the finances are managed responsibly and not let the charity trade while insolvent. In practice, that means turning up prepared, asking questions and speaking up about conflicts. Read the ACNC governance standards.

Start small
You don't need to start as a director. These are good first roles, especially if you have bookkeeping or admin skills:
- Treasurer or secretary at a local club, school board or landcare group
- A seat on a board's fundraising or events sub-committee, to see how the board works
- A casual vacancy, where a board appoints someone mid-year until the next AGM

Board roles fill quickly, so we link to the best places to search rather than listing roles here.

Want to sit in on a board first?
Some programmes prepare you for a board, and a few seat you on one as an observer first. We list them on the Create page. We're also building a board observer pathway for Perth, pairing people with a board for a year as a non-voting observer.
